Eco Nappy Actions

If you are already following our washing guidelines and achieving your 40% carbon saving then consider some of these easy actions to help the environment even more:

Use washable nappy liners –

Washable nappy liners can be used again and again, reducing the amount of resources that are used to make the flushable ones.  Washable liners can be made very simply at home from some fleece fabric.  The great news is that using fleece liners can save you over £60 per baby compared to flushable liners.

Use washable wet wipes –

Disposable wet wipes may be very convenient but did you know that if you use 2 wipes per nappy change you could spend up to £235 just on wipes!  These also end up in landfill sites and have their own environmental impact.  You can buy washable wet wipes or make your own from an old towel, use with plain water and wash with your nappies!

Choose Real Nappies that are manufactured in the UK, or are shipped rather than air freighted -

This will reduce ‘nappy miles’ and therefore reduce the overall environmental impact of the nappy.

Choose Real Nappies made from organic and/or unbleached fabrics -

Cotton is traditionally a difficult crop to grow and farmers often use artificial fertilisers and pesticides which can contaminate the land and water around the farm.  However, more and more companies are producing nappies made from organic materials which are made from crops which haven’t required chemicals.  If organic nappies are too expensive look for unbleached products as chemical bleaching is harmful to our environment; or consider products made from bamboo or hemp.  Bamboo and hemp are easier to grow than cotton and require less chemicals so are naturally more environmentally friendly.

Ensure your Real Nappies have been made ethically –

From fabric choices to factory working conditions.  Ask your retailer if the nappies you like are made in a factory which guarantees fair conditions for its workers and which helps its local community.

Pass them on –

Reuse your Real Nappies on another baby or sell them on, you could make up to half your money back and the more your nappies get used, the better it is for the environment!
