Going Potty

12/08/2010 15:01pm

When it comes to potty training the amount of advice and theories which are offered to parents is endless. The current national average age that children potty train is thought to be between 2 and 3; with increasing reports of this age being pushed further and further back.

There are a number of suggested reasons for this trend including busy lifestyles, the convenience of modern products and appliances used by parents and working families struggling to provide a consistent approach to potty training.

It is certainly true that babies born in parts of the world where nappies are not available, due to lack of money and vital resources such as water, are potty trained at an earlier age out of necessity.

Many parents and healthcare professionals can offer anecdotal evidence to suggest that children in washable nappies will potty train earlier. The main believed benefit of Real Nappies is that they are made from naturally absorbent materials which will feel wet to baby before drawing the moisture away from the skin. This will allow baby to connect the sensations of a full bladder, the sensation of releasing and the sensation of wetness.

When you reach potty training time, washable training pants are available. All styles are fantastically easy to use, wash with normal clothes and encourage your child to develop a degree of independence with their pull-up styles.

Which ever nappy you decide to use there are no hard and fast rules to potty training including what is the right age to start. It is however important to remember that every baby is different and to trust your instinct as a parent.

Advice is always available from your local health visitor team or your can contact our project team. http://www.goreal.org.uk/contact-us

Some parents successfully assist their baby on the potty from a very early age using a method callled 'Elimination Communication' (EC). We have written a guide on EC which can be found here: http://www.goreal.org.uk/guide/index/view/page/2/id/84

You can visit our YouTube page for a video introduction to EC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h67lD8BvQI

For potty training I found that with pocket nappies, if I put the absorbant layer on top of the "stay dry" layer, then my child felt the wet feeling instantly, and was able to quickly make the association. That is where I found washable nappies to be so useful in potty training as you can vary them to fit your purpose. I also had a little pull up cover that worked great over a pair of "big girl pants" but just stopped little accidents going on clothes for the first while.

I was disappointed with this article. Your email said it would be "a guide that will offer you clear and simple advice on potty training with Real Nappies." But that's not what the article is. I was expecting hints and tips about how it is different potty training your toddler from real nappies as opposed to disposables. Or maybe some suggestions about how to get started. What a shame, this promised so much, and delivered so little.
