number of nappies
Hello,
About to have my first baby and would like to go for washable nappies. I was wondering how many nappies I should start with, knowing that I would prefer not to use a tumble dryer, leaving me with the only option of drying the nappies in front of the heater in the winter and outside on sunny days. I'm worried that 20 might not be enough (not because of the washing but because of the drying turn over time). Any suggestion?
thanks
Hi Sophie
Generally 20 should be enough but if you're a bit worried go for 25. Don't forget that you can always buy more at a later date.
If you're thinking of using a natural fibre though i.e. Bamboo, remember that whilst they are fantastically absorbant they do take ages to dry, therefore you'd probably need even more (especially in the winter time). The last thing you want to have is nappies drying all over the place. Most manmade fibres will dry really quickly, something like a Fuzzi Bunz practically comes out dry or a Micro Nappy with wrap would be ideal?
Hi
I would go for a minimum of 36 as they say 8-12 changes per day and thats up to 3 days worth. and do some washing each day they can go in with other laundry now adays so no worries you can give them a pre soak in something like 'nappysan' if you feel they warent it but check manufaturers instructions first.
to be honest see if there is a local grant scheme or voucher offer with your local council, to get money off them as well.
best of luck and drying in front of the heater shouldnt take too long to do doubt it would take 24 hours.

It really depends on firstly how often you want to wash the nappies, and secondly which fabrics and what your drying facilities are like.
Newborns get through 8-12 nappies per day, but once they are a bit bigger they might only get through 5-6 per day, so you don't want to waste your money unnecessarily on lots of nappies that will only get used for a couple of months. If you plan to buy sized nappies maybe make up the numbers with a few one size nappies to use overnight (if you don't like the appearance of the bulkiness of one size nappies) and then you can use the one size as size 2 nappies once baby is a bit bigger.
Bamboo fabric takes at least 24 hours to dry properly and sometimes can take twice as long as that. Whereas man-made fabrics are often virtually dry when they come out of the washing machine. You can do the sums but you can see it really does vary quite considerably.
