Clothes do not fit over the nappy help!
I am really pleased with my terry nappies and started to use them last week on my four week little girl:) I am fine with her wearing them around the house as I can just about get her vest and baby grow on however when it comes to putting on other clothes the nappy is just too big for the clothes to go over the top! I am really annoyed as I would like to use the nappys when out but at the moment can not due to this issue. Am I doing something wrong? I am using flat nappys with Motherease wraps the only option I feel may be to go out and buy a set of small size terrys but my mom was fine using the normal size on me so what has happened are the clothes manufacturers just not catering for babies to be wearing terrys now?

Baby clothes are a lot neater fit than they used to be a generation ago purely as more people now use disposables nappies which are slimmer. However don't be put off as there are solutions and this problem is only temporary and generally by 9 months old clothes fit much easier as baby is more in proportion to the nappy. For a newborn baby folded muslins with the Motherease wrap over the top are ideal as they are very slim. A folded muslin will last approx 2 hours which is the recommended change frequency of a newborn anyway. The link below takes you to our video on how to fold and use muslins.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx7bmXuj5tMAs baby grows and gets to the top of the weight range for the baby vests these will become a bit tight to go over the nappy easily. The amazing simple gadget of the vest extenders are perfect for solving this and many parents who use disposables use these anyway as baby vests do tend to shrink anyway. Link below takes you to a demo video of the vest extenders.

There are clothes that are especially designed for fitting over cloth nappies. I must admit i've never bought any of these myself and just used stretchy clothes more. In the last year types of trousers called easy up trousers have become much more readily available on the high street. They started in Gap but are now available in Mothercare and Tescos. The Tesco ones are the cheapest (approx £7) and definitely my favouites. Easy Up Trousers basically look like normal jeans however the waist band is made of elasticated jogging bottoms band so they fit over nappies easily. You'll find more information about clothing and cloth nappies on the link below:

Thankyou so much for your reply I have started to put more stretchy clothes on her as I feel that she may be too heavy now for muslin cloths. Am planning a trip to the local Tescos as I have seen the Trousers you mentioned on the internet and they are lovely am also very tempted by the cut4cloth clothes they are wonderful and such a great idea :)
Was brave enough the other day to take her out in the terry nappies and used them no problem it was so easy to fold them ready and roll them into my changing bag. It just takes a bit of preparation but is well worth it. Thank you again as your website and utube videos helped me alot to make my decision to use terrys.

Hi Amy
Sorry I didn't reply last week but I missed your post somehow - great response from Wendy though :)
If you email me your email address (bec@goreal.org.uk) I can send you our folding instruction sheets - the neat fold is great for smaller babies whilst still very absorbent. I would agree with the Cut 4 Cloth clothing recommendation - Bishopston Trading are also worth a look as are the companies featured on our offers page: http://www.goreal.org.uk/discounts who should all be able to advise you with sizing.
I found it got much easier as my babies grew bigger and the nappies became less bulky in comparison to their size. Good luck and please do post here if you have any more queries,
Bec

Dear Amy,
In regard to trousers not fitting over real nappies.... Nappies by Minki (www.nappiesbyminki.co.uk) do some really cool reversible trousers that are specially designed to fit over larger bottoms!! They are beautifully made (like all Minki stuff) and are only £10. They come in a range of colours & sizes.
Hope that helps,
Hettie Harris.
